Reykjavík Midsummer Music
Reykjavík Midsummer Music is a music festival in Harpa, Reykjavík’s fabulous concert house. Founded in 2012 by pianist Víkingur Ólafsson, who also serves as artistic director, RMM was chosen ‘Event of the Year’ and received a special innovation prize at the Icelandic Music Awards in 2013, praised for its dynamic concerts and artistic vision.
RMM takes place in June each year, a time Víkingur describes as “ideal for creating something beautiful up in the north, inspired by the extraordinary energy that results from 24 hours of daylight”. The festival features some of the best and the brightest from Iceland’s vibrant music scene, bringing them together with stars from the international concert stage for a few days of beauty and brilliance in downtown Reykjavík.
Now in its third year, Reykjavík Midsummer Music has become an integral part of the capital’s musical life during the summer. This year’s theme, ‘Minimal-Maximal’, will be reflected in numerous ways through dynamic programme of happenings, concerts, off-venue events, DJ-sets and improvisations. This year’s artists include Grammy Award winning ensemble Mahler Chamber Orchestra, DJ Georg Conrad, Davíð Þór Jónsson, Ghostigital, Víkingur Ólafsson, Bryndís Halla Gylfadóttir, Nordic Council Music Prize winner Pekka Kuusisto and Sayaka Shoji. And many more.
