Midnight Sun River Festival
After a huge success in its “first annual” beginnings last summer, Iceland’s original whitewater adventure festival is now plunging head-on into its second year, and gearing up to be even bigger and better than before! This mid-summer weekend is a celebration of Iceland’s wild rivers, beautiful wilderness, lively adventure culture, and of course the smiling rays of the endless summer sun. The festivities kick off in true adventurous style with an overnight rafting trip down the legendary Jökulsá-Austari (East Glacial River), facing world-class rapids and stunning scenery in one of Iceland’s most remote and beautiful river canyons, on a trip that happens only once a year!
The second day’s main event in an “extreme kayak race”, traditionally customized to suit the level of participants, and always featuring plenty of laughs and excitement for both competitors and spectators. On this day we will run an “all-boats-on-the-water” rafting and kayaking trip down Jökulsá-Vestari (West Glacial River), the beautiful little sister of the mighty Austari, with the goal of getting as many paddlers together out on the water as possible!
Of course no great festival is complete without live music, bonfires, camping, good food and drink, and a gathering of great people! Located in the heart of North Iceland’s great whitewater rivers, this festival is hosted by Viking Rafting at their beautiful countryside base camp.
Created by paddlers and open to everyone, this event is dedicated to kayakers, travellers, locals, spectators, and anyone who appreciates a good splash of adventure, likes to celebrate the beauty of our great outdoors, or is simply searching for the wildest way to worship the midnight sun on the longest day of the year!
