Kirkjubaejarklaustur Chamber Music Festival
The annual Kirkjubaejarklaustur Chamber Music Festival offers classical concerts and a creative music work-shop for children. The family ensemble Spilmenn Ríkínís will perform old Icelandic music on traditional instruments, such as “langspil”, the chamber choir Hljómeyki, conducted by Marta Guðrún Halldórsdóttir, will sing Icelandic songs for mixed choir and the Spanish Trio Roncesvalles will play Spanish music ranging from medieval Sephardic melodies to the premiere of this year’s festival commission, a new piece by Thora Marteinsdóttir. Children aged 5-12 will have the opportunity to take part in a creative music work-shop, lead by Gunnar Ben from the band Skálmöld, which will culminate in them taking part in the festival’s final concert with the professional musicians. The festival has been very popular since its first edition in 1991. In the line of the festival’s aim to promote creativity it has commissioned several new pieces from Icelandic composers to be premiered there and many of the concerts have been recorded by the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service. The festival, which is organized by The Skaftárhreppur Cultural Committee, gives people a good chance to enjoy classical music and the beauty of nature in the same place. The concerts will take place on Friday 27 June at 21:00, Saturday 28 June at 17:00 and Sunday 29 June at 15:00.
